Domaine Audiffred

Vosne Romanée - Burgundy
Henri Audiffred is one of those people where you immediately sense that wine is not a role for him – it's simply his life. He is cheerful, straightforward, and completely unpretentious. When he talks about the wines, he doesn't talk about himself. He talks about the vintage, about the plots, about the work that was put in – and you quickly understand that this is where his pride lies: in what ends up in the bottle.
That Henri worked for 13 years at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is not just a line in a bio. It's a kind of training that settles in the body. DRC is a place where "almost good enough" doesn't exist, and where small decisions are the difference between something correct and something great. That schooling is evident in Henri in the way the wines are composed: an almost instinctive sense of precision, of timing, and of letting the terroir stand freely. Not because he tries to imitate anything – but because he has helped make wine at the highest level, and one does not abandon that standard again.
Domaine Audiffred is a small family domaine in Vosne-Romanée — and it's hard to overestimate how much that alone means. Vosne is some of the holiest ground in Burgundy: a place where even "village" can feel like a reference, and where the right plots can deliver an expression that is truly special in the region. That's why Audiffred hits so hard when you taste the wines: here, Vosne is not a label, but an energy in the glass.
The domaine is about 5 hectares, and that size is felt in everything. This is not a place where you can "solve" things with volume. The quantities are small, and the quality seems built on repetition and self-demand — year after year. And that's precisely what makes the wines so convincing: the purity of the fruit, the precise structure, and a balance that never feels contrived. The fruit is clear and clean, without being sweetened or prettified, and the terroir is allowed to draw the lines. The wines have depth, but they never feel heavy. They have perfume, but they never become "perfume." They stand with a kind of natural authority.
The portfolio has Vosne at its heart, with wines from Vosne-Romanée – including lieux-dits such as Aux Chalandins and Aux Champs-Perdrix – and with a strong peak in Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots. In addition, there is a range of very serious forays into Côte de Nuits, including Nuits-Saint-Georges (incl. Les Argillats), Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Marchais” and Morey-Saint-Denis, as well as expressions from Côte de Beaune such as Pommard (En Mareau), Beaune “Chaume Gaufriot” and Aloxe-Corton “Les Valozières”. But the most remarkable thing is not the list of appellations — it's how high the level is throughout the entire range. There is a consistency here that is rarely found: even the first cuvées taste as if they are taken seriously.
The vinification precisely supports that expression. The approach is classic and clean: 100% destemming, spontaneous fermentation, short cold pre-maceration, and an élevage in used barrels (typically 12–18 months). Nothing feels added. Everything feels refined, so the wines can stand out clearly.
Domaine Audiffred is today one of those domaines you almost only discover if you go there and meet the people behind it. There is surprisingly little about them online, but that actually fits very well: this is not a domaine that lives off stories. It lives off the wines. And the wines are — honestly — some of the most beautiful and pure Vosne expressions I have tasted in a long time.
