Atsuo Yamanaka
Atsuo Yamanaka is one of those producers who simply possesses his own unique energy. Before wine, he was a professional snowboarder, and there's still something free, uncompromising, and deeply personal about his approach. Later, he found his way to the vineyards of Hokkaido, worked with Takahiko Soga, and then established Domaine Mont in 2016. It's clear that his work comes from a person with their own perspective and rhythm.
He is preoccupied with finesse, texture, depth, and length. The wines should have presence and movement, and they should be able to complement food. There's something very Japanese about the way he seeks balance and nuances. Pinot Gris has become his grape, and with Atsuo, it gains an expression that is entirely his own: salty, layered, lightly spiced, umami-driven, and with an almost meditative calm. These are the kinds of wines you don't just taste. You linger over them.
Domaine Mont is located in Yoichi, Hokkaido, and is considered one of Japan's most cult-like and sought-after small producers. Production is very small, and everything about the estate reflects great precision and patience. Atsuo works with only 1.5 hectares and extremely small quantities, and some cuvées are made in an almost unbelievably small number of bottles.
Domaine Mont is now one of the names that collectors and top restaurants keep a very close eye on.
The wines are only released after several years in the bottle and only when they are ready. This is an important part of the estate's identity. Everything is given time, and this can be felt in the wines. They have a calmness, a depth, and a unity that is hard to find elsewhere.
In the vineyard, Atsuo works very close to nature and with great respect for his terroir. In the cellar, the approach is free and uncompromising, with spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention, and wines that are allowed to retain their own form. Dom Gris, in particular, has already achieved an almost iconic status: a wine with depth, saltiness, structure, and a very special aromatic register that makes it completely unique. These are not wines that try to imitate anything else. That is precisely what makes Domaine Mont so strong. Once you taste the wines, you quickly understand why they have achieved the status they have.
The wines from Domaine Mont are highly allocated.
