Carillon Frères

Puligny-Montrachet · Bourgogne

Carillon Frères is a new, independent domaine from François Carillon's sons, Paul and Mathis. The family's vineyards have been divided, and the brothers now work with their own parcels, their own vineyard management and a first production of only around 2,000 bottles.

Behind the domaine

Paul og Mathis Carillon

The Carillon family can document winegrowing in Puligny-Montrachet back to Jean Carillon in 1520. Paul and Mathis are the next generation and have chosen to create their own domaine within this long history. Their share of the family's vineyard portfolio has been separated out to Carillon Frères, giving the brothers responsibility for their own parcels from the work in the vineyards to the finished wine.

Both are young, open and deeply engaged in understanding the vineyards through their own work. The extremely small first vintage has a purity, texture and saline length that immediately place the domaine at a high level.

It is hard not to be moved by this beginning. Paul and Mathis bring generations of experience from Puligny, and the wines already have their own form: pure, textured and with a long, saline finish. Noyer Bret and LouLou show a domaine with far greater weight than the minuscule first production suggests.

Own parcels and micro-production from Puligny-Montrachet

On their own parcels, Paul and Mathis work without herbicides and with Guyot-Poussard pruning, a practice the family has followed since 1992. Yields are kept low, and the first total production was around 2,000 bottles. Noyer Bret is a Puligny-Montrachet village from a single lieu-dit and yielded roughly 1,800 bottles plus 100 magnums.

Noyer Bret spent around ten months on the lees in barrel and then roughly ten months in tank. LouLou is a single barrel made from fruit from four premier crus: Les Perrières, Les Combettes, Les Folatières and Champ Gain. Around 280 bottles were made, and roughly 200 were released.

LouLou spent around 11 months in barrel and then 12 months in a 228-litre tank. Bâtonnage was carried out from the end of the alcoholic fermentation to the end of the malolactic. The proportion of new oak is around 12 per cent. The method gives the wines both texture and a very pure, chalky finish.

The wines

Puligny-Montrachet, Noyer Bret Village

C. 1,800 bottles and 100 magnums · c. 10 months in barrel + 10 months in tank

Noyer Bret is an impressive debut. Citrus, white flowers, wet stone and a discreet reduction sit over a firm, precise texture. The long combination of barrel and tank gives both depth and purity. The wine has the salinity and length one wants from Puligny, and already plays at a level that far more established domaines strive for.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, LouLou Premier Cru

One barrel from Les Perrières, Les Combettes, Les Folatières and Champ Gain · c. 280 bottles, c. 200 released · 11 months in barrel + 12 months in 228-litre tank

LouLou brings four of Puligny's great premier cru vineyards together in one extremely rare cuvée. The wine is dense and deep, with ripe citrus, chalk, smoke and a long development in the glass. The different vineyards contribute breadth, energy and great minerality. A micro-cuvée of enormous potential and one of the most fascinating new white Burgundies in Rarité's portfolio.
