Domaine Soyer covers just 3.45 hectares, but the vineyard holdings are far stronger than the size suggests. With Julie Soyer at the helm, the domaine has become one of the most interesting new stories in Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Behind the domaine
Julie Soyer
Domaine Soyer was founded by Marcel Soyer in the 1950s. His son Laurent took over in 1988, and in 2023 Julie returned home after her training and experience at, among others, Château Haut-Brion. She made the 2023 together with her father, Laurent. From 2024, the direction is hers.
Julie is direct, warm and full of natural ease. The same has begun to show in the wines. Compared with 2023, the 2024s have more lift, purer fruit and far finer extraction. It is a marked shift in a very short time and a strong sign of her sensibility.
2024 was also brutal. Mildew cost around 90 per cent of the harvest, and several parcels did not yield enough for a full barrel. Julie therefore chose to make two Nuits blends rather than force the individual vineyards through as symbolic micro-cuvées. The decision shows both realism and a very sure instinct for quality.
Vineyards and cellar
Four lieux-dits on the Vosne side of Nuits
The domaine holds four lieux-dits in Nuits-Saint-Georges: Aux Tuyots, Aux Herbues, Aux Saints-Jacques and Aux Saints-Juliens. All lie on the northern side of the appellation towards Vosne-Romanée. This gives the wines more perfume and finesse than the stereotypical, powerful image of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Many of the vines are 60–70 years old. In normal years the parcels are bottled separately, so the differences can be followed. Aux Herbues and Aux Tuyots are the brighter, more perfumed expressions; Saints-Jacques and Saints-Juliens give more depth and structure. The Hautes-Côtes wine Les Grandes Toppes comes from a cooler area and is produced in very few bottles.
The 2024 wines were raised for around 12 months in used barrels. Avenir brings together Aux Tuyots and Aux Herbues and was produced in 569 bottles. Héritage brings together Aux Saints-Jacques and Aux Saints-Juliens and was produced in 591 bottles. Les Grandes Toppes was produced in 299 bottles. The quantities are minute, but the first vintage under Julie has already moved the domaine into an entirely new league.

Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Les Grandes Toppes Régionale

Les Grandes Toppes is bright, juicy and full of freshness. Red berries, herbs and a fine stony finish make it immediate, but the old vines and low production give more depth than one expects. An unusually charming and precise introduction to Julie Soyer's style.
Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aux Tuyots Village
Single lieu-dit on the Vosne side · old Pinot Noir vines
Aux Tuyots is juicy, spicy and fine-grained. Red berries and flowers sit over a firm but light structure. Under Julie the fruit stands brighter and more open, and the wine shows the elegant side of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aux Herbues Village
Lieu-dit close to Vosne-Romanée · many vines 60–70 years old
Aux Herbues is the most perfumed of the parcels. Roses, red cherries and Vosne-like spice flow through a silk-fine tannin. It has great length and a level that makes the vineyard one of the domaine's clear strengths.
Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aux Saints-Jacques Village
Single lieu-dit · old vines · the more structured part of the range
Aux Saints-Jacques is darker and more concentrated. It has dense fruit, stone and a firm mineral core, but Julie's lighter extraction keeps the wine alive. It is the most serious of the four parcels and a strong cellar wine.
Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aux Saints-Juliens Village
Single lieu-dit on the northern side of Nuits-Saint-Georges
Aux Saints-Juliens is more open and juicy than Saints-Jacques. Red berries, spice and a supple tannin give charm, while a cool acidity keeps the wine precise. A very fine balance between Nuits structure and Vosne perfume.
Nuits-Saint-Georges, Héritage 2024 Village
Blend of Aux Saints-Jacques and Aux Saints-Juliens · 591 bottles · created after a harvest loss of approx. 90 per cent
Héritage is the deeper of Julie's two 2024 cuvées. Saints-Jacques provides core and structure, while Saints-Juliens opens the fruit and makes the tannin more fluid. Dark cherries, spice and stone stand clearly defined. An impressive wine from an extremely difficult debut vintage.
Nuits-Saint-Georges, Avenir 2024 Village
Blend of Aux Tuyots and Aux Herbues · 569 bottles · approx. 12 months in used barrels
Avenir is bright, perfumed and very juicy. The combination of Tuyots and Herbues gives roses, red berries and the fine spice that characterises the Vosne side of Nuits. The name fits: the wine points directly towards the level to which Julie can take the domaine.
